A headache makes my head feel as though it is about to burst. A fever makes my eyes feel as though they are melting. Both forms of pain are transformed into instruments with distinct and unexpectedly beautiful sounds.

The injured ankle swells like a peach. A peach tree grows from the swollen ankle. I look at the peach on the tree and feel my hair slowly turning into peaches.

“What should I do if I have to live with this pain for the rest of my life?” the girl wondered. She felt a thread, like a strand of hair, endlessly tickling her throat. If only she could pull it out, the irritation would stop.

But the thread seemed to have no end. Telling herself not to lose heart or give up, she began knitting the endless strand—in the hope of forgetting the pain and continuing on.
