Notes and essays on my work, life, and the thoughts that have gradually become clearer to me.
August 2026
Only recently did I begin to understand why I had needed to make art so desperately. I also began to understand why, despite working constantly, I had rarely thought about what I would do with the finished works.
For a long time, I did not know what I wanted or needed. Whenever a thought or feeling arose, I immediately questioned whether it was legitimate and censored myself. At eleven, I began trying to numb my memories, emotions, and thoughts, and to dull my senses and intuition. After February 2007, this was no longer something I could control. Eventually, I lost even the sense that I was forgetting or ignoring something. I could no longer imagine dreams of my own or set specific goals.
In the past, I wanted to avoid other people’s attention. I disliked my unique name and being an identical twin, and wanted to remain in no one’s memory, as if I were not there. Only recently did I realize how strongly this wish still affects me. It makes it difficult even to want to show my work to others.
Six years after graduating in Korea, I entered art school again in Germany. This was not the result of a clear artistic goal. I had come to Germany in 2017 because I needed space from my family, and art school was one realistic way to remain after my working holiday visa ended. Once I became a student again, I simply wanted to do my best and not repeat the regret of not having fully devoted myself to my work in Korea.
Immersing myself in work allowed me to step away from the thoughts and emotions that tormented me. Watching something gradually take shape and reach completion helped me build trust in myself. Turning a long-held thought into a work also made its mental and emotional weight a little lighter. This was why I kept working without pause.
These works did not begin with clear ideas or firm plans. My thoughts had settled like sediment in the unconscious. They were faint, complex, and deeply intertwined. Only by making could I discover where a work needed to go and how a long-held thought might reach closure. Different thoughts required different materials and methods. This is why my work is not centered on a single material or medium.
Only recently did I understand more clearly what making art had been doing for me. It allowed me to face what had accumulated without disappearing, end what could be ended, and let go of what could be released. In doing so, I could create mental and emotional space within myself to think and move again.
I now see a common starting point in many of my works. A memory, thought, sensation, association, or question briefly emerges from the unconscious. I trace where it came from, organize my thoughts, and ask whether it concerns only me or might also connect with others. Works developed through this longer process fall under “Long Breath.” Works I made because I needed them, as well as works I began immediately from an idea without prolonged consideration, fall under “Short Breath.” It was only while making my portfolio book in 2025 that I discovered this distinction.
Now I want to move beyond recovering what has been forgotten. I want to choose what to continue and what to end, and to shape my future through my own decisions. I hope to stop constantly doubting myself and, one day, feel unburdened and at peace.
This is a slightly abridged English translation of my Korean text.
